Depression

Prevention

Although it may not be possible to prevent the initial onset of depression, there are several measures that can be taken to prevent the recurrence of symptoms in people who have previously suffered from a depressive illness. Psychological interventions should be aimed at increasing coping skills and helping the patient to live with the stressors which may be contributing to their illness.

Some 'common-sense' measures include:

  • setting realistic tasks or goals in everyday life
  • surrounding yourself with people who make you feel at ease as much as you can
  • relaxation and participation in pleasurable activities
  • engaging in gentle exercise several times a week.

A mood stabilising drug may be prescribed as a preventative therapy in people prone to depression.
